Hahn’s Macaws, also known as Red-shouldered Macaws, are small parrots that are popular as pets due to their intelligent and social nature. Breeding these birds requires specific conditions to ensure the health and viability of the eggs.

Overview of Hahn’s Macaw Eggs

1. Egg Laying and Incubation:
– **Clutch Size**: Hahn’s Macaws typically lay between 3 to 5 eggs per clutch.
– **Incubation Period**: The eggs are incubated for about 24 to 26 days. The female usually incubates the eggs while the male provides food.
– **Temperature and Humidity**: The ideal temperature for incubating Hahn’s Macaw eggs is around 99°F (37.2°C), and the humidity should be maintained at around 50-55%.

2. Nesting Conditions:
– **Nesting Box**: A suitable nesting box should be provided, with dimensions appropriate for Hahn’s Macaws. A box measuring approximately 12 inches by 12 inches by 12 inches with a 3-inch diameter entrance hole is often recommended.
– **Bedding Material**: Clean, dry materials like pine shavings or shredded paper can be used as nesting material.

3. Egg Care:
– **Turning the Eggs**: If you are artificially incubating the eggs, it’s important to turn them several times a day to ensure proper development.
– **Candling**: This technique involves using a bright light to check the development of the embryo inside the egg. Candling can help identify infertile or non-developing eggs early on.

4. Post-Hatching Care:
– **Brooder**: After hatching, chicks should be kept in a brooder with a stable temperature of about 95°F (35°C) initially, gradually decreasing as they grow.
– **Feeding**: Hand-feeding may be necessary, especially if the parents are inexperienced. A commercial hand-rearing formula specific for parrots can be used.

 Breeding Considerations

– **Pair Compatibility**: Ensuring that the breeding pair is bonded and compatible is crucial for successful breeding.
– **Health Check**: Regular veterinary check-ups for the breeding pair are important to ensure they are healthy and free from any infections or diseases.
– **Diet**: A balanced diet rich in calcium and other nutrients is essential for egg-laying females to prevent egg binding and ensure strong eggshells.

Breeding Hahn’s Macaws can be a rewarding experience, but it requires dedication, knowledge, and careful attention to detail. If you are new to breeding parrots, consulting with an avian veterinarian or an experienced breeder can provide valuable insights and support.

Trainability: When hand-raised, these birds make wonderful pets. Their owners will be captivated by their antics. (Wasabi, Laura’s bird, rules her household and takes no back seat to her two Cockatoos, despite her small size).

Good talkers, and extremely animated, Hahn’s Macaws are very intelligent and quick to learn words and tricks. They are very active, always looking for the next thing to climb or chew.

Loudness: Like all Macaws, the Hahns Macaw can be a bit vocal. However, they do not have the loud squawk that larger Macaws are famous for.

They would make a decent apartment bird if you are not too sensitive to noise (or have nosey neighbors who are). But if noise is an issue, perhaps another parrot species would be more appropriate for your home. Minimum cage requirement: 18″ x 18″ x 44″ with 1/2″-3/4″ bar spacing.
